2028 Centenary Celebrations

The centenary of police sport through the Police Athletic Association (PAA) and Police Sport UK (PSUK) will be celebrated in 2028, marking 100 years of organised police sport.

The Board has previously agreed that this significant milestone should be commemorated appropriately and in a manner befitting its importance. To support this objective, a working group was established to develop and recommend a programme of events and initiatives for consideration by the Board.

The working group comprises:

  • Peter Darling (Chair)
  • John Davies
  • Stuart Welch
  • Jed Kenyon

Objectives

The working group has agreed the following objectives:

To present recommendations to the Board of Directors for a programme of events and initiatives that appropriately commemorate 100 years of police sport through the PAA and PSUK.

The programme should be developed in accordance with the following principles:

  • The centenary represents a landmark occasion in the history of police sport and should be celebrated accordingly.
  • The programme should recognise and involve both Force Sports Clubs and individual PSUK sporting sections.
  • The celebrations should not impose a financial burden on Force Sports Clubs or sporting sections.
  • PSUK's strong financial position should be utilised to support an appropriate level of investment in centenary activities.
  • Opportunities for external funding and sponsorship, including support through Team Police and other partners, should be maximised in order to enhance the programme and reduce overall costs.

Proposed Centenary Week

Whilst individual sporting sections may choose to recognise the centenary throughout 2028, it is proposed that a dedicated week of celebrations be held commencing Monday 22 May 2028.

This period has been selected for the following reasons:

  • Historically favourable weather conditions.
  • Greater appeal for sponsors and external partners than weekend events.
  • The opportunity to align a number of PSUK events, reducing travel commitments and costs for participants.
  • No major events have currently been identified during this period.

Proposed Location: Sheffield

The working group recommends that the principal centenary events be held in Sheffield for the following reasons:

  • Its central location and accessibility.
  • Availability of a wide range of high-quality sporting facilities and venues.
  • Historical significance, as the first AGM of the PAA was held at Niagara, Sheffield.

Monday 22 May 2028

  • National sporting championships and centenary sporting events.
