Competing in challenging conditions, the team of eight swimmers from 7 different forces, the largest GB Police squad ever assembled, battled strong winds across the lake as well as tough competition from across the country. Despite the testing conditions, the team produced an outstanding performance, bringing home an impressive eight medals: four gold, three silver and one bronze.
The squad included three new team members, demonstrating the continued growth and strength of GB Police Open Water Swimming. Their performances contributed to one of the most successful championships in the team's history and highlighted the determination, resilience and teamwork that runs throughout the team.
Chris Mathlin became the team's unofficial weather forecaster, providing early morning updates on the conditions after staying over in his van. He was able to let everyone know that the first event was on track despite the wind playing a significant factor throughout the competition.
A special mention goes to the relay team of Nigel, Kate, Lindsey, and Dan, who delivered a fantastic performance to claim silver. Battling gusty conditions on the lake, the quartet worked superbly together to secure their place on the podium and add to the team's remarkable medal tally.
The individual successes were equally impressive. Rich Evans (Met) claimed gold in the 3K event, while Joe Stratton (West Mids) took gold in the 1K race. Kate Arnold (Thames Valley) enjoyed a standout competition, winning gold in both the 5K and 1K events. Silver medals were secured by Emily Ezard (South Wales) in the 1K event and Lindsey Curnow (Devon & Cornwall) in the 1K event, while Dan Thomas (Gwent) added a bronze medal in the 3K race.
To return home with four golds, three silvers and a bronze is a tremendous achievement and reflects the dedication, commitment, and hard work of everyone involved. The success of both experienced swimmers and newer team members highlights the strength and depth within the GB Police Swimming Team.
